Stray Cats
How do you get rid of stray cats that keep coming into your yard?

Stray cats keep coming into my fam's yard and we have a fence but either they climb up the fence or they go under the fence. Any advice?
Oh and by the way my family hates those cats because they keep burying their poop in the mulch in our front yard - and it's just gross. And when we walk by the mulch it smells.

To the other answers: They ARE doing harm. Stray cats are defecating in the yard, which can spread intestinal parasites and toxoplasmosis. They can also spread fleas and other external parasites.

I hate ferals too. I live in a rural area and nothing is more disgusting than finding feces in my yard or garden. I don't know what these animals might be carrying, and I have a child and 2 cats and 2 dogs and I certainly don't wish them to contract something from these strays. Living in the country means that people either purposely allow their animals to run loose or dump unwanted animals in the area. Either way, it creates a huge problem. Feral cats are also one of the primary predators of songbirds.

What do we do? Trap them. Luckily, our local shelter accepts cats. Are most of them euthanized? Yes. It is a shame, I certainly don't wish these animals harm, but neither I nor my neighbors created the problem and we deal with it the best way we can. These animals are wild and unadoptable. I do not personally believe in TNR, and it would not work in our area as neither I nor my neighbors are willing to feed and provide for ferals, even sterile ones. Thus, the only thing we can do is trap them and remove them. You will have to check if your local shelters will accept cats. Call animal control as well. Some locales will come and trap the cats for you, otherwise you will have to trap them and take them to the shelter, or some places will pick up the trapped cats.

Simply purchase a large (raccoon-sized) Havahart or similar live trap, and set it up with some cat food or tuna or any sort of meat in the back of the trap. For best results, bait it but wedge a stick through the trap so the door won't shut (it will make sense once you have the trap). After the bait has been hit a few times, remove the stick and set the trap. I bet the next day you'll have a cat. After you remove that cat, simply reset the trap with fresh bait. You may get better results by placing the trap in a different location and wedging it open again for a few days to make sure the bait is hit before you set the trap again. Some cats become trap-shy and are hard to catch.
Very best wishes to you!

ADDED: I find it hard to believe that I'm the only person who actually empathizes with this person. If you aren't worried about toxo (which actual incidence is 20% to 60% in feral populations, depending on the survey; I don't know where the other poster got only 2%), how about rabies? Ferals need to be dealt with in some manner. I don't like TNR because it doesn't deal with the problem...the colony will still spread parasites and disease and will continue to urinate/defecate in people's yards. I also have zero tolerance for folks who allow their pet cats to roam the neighborhoods freely, causing strife with responsible owner's indoor cats, getting into garbage, spraying and defecating in garden/yard/garage etc.. Whether feral or owned, wandering felines cause a great deal of trouble with innocent neighbors.

I'm wondering if some of these answers own indoor/outdoor or outdoor kitties. If you don't want your cat trapped and destroyed, keep it inside. If it is feral, the person who's property is being damaged has the right to deal with the problem as they see fit. I love cats and have two of them myself, but to me, an 'infestation' of ferals is not much different than an infestation of mice in my house, and must be dealt with similarly.
