Do Japanese people really serve fish that is still alive?
I am going to Japan this summer and the one thing I'm not looking forward to is the still living sushi they serve.
I love sushi but I don't like the idea of a moving fish on my plate, but I wouldn't want to offend any of the Japanese customs.
I wouldn't really care if the fish was already dead though...
So what I am wondering is if the moving fish they serve are still alive or if they are just moving from nerves or something... Does anyone know??
I cannot remember exactly where but it was in the Izu Peninsula near Shimoda. I was driving with my girlfriend when we came across a little make shift hut on the beach with a small fishing boat next to it. We walked over, and they were serving live sashimi of fish that are still alive. The fisherman/cook pinned the head of a livve small fish (I forgot what kind it was but only about 8 inches long) on a wooden board then cleaned the inner organs in about 15 seconds, and opened the flesh, chopped it into pieces still within the fish's body, and served it to us to eat right there. The whole process took less than a minute.
We picked the raw flesh directly from the body of the fish which was still moving its tail and head. It was delicious as well as an unforgettable experience. The flesh caused a little electrical tinge on my tongue becuse muscle fibers were still firing actively.
